University of Iowa ranks in Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted U.S. utility patents in 2023

The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has released their Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents in 2023. Published annually, this ranking serves to highlight and celebrate U.S. universities that play a large role in advancing innovation and invention in the United States. Iowa ranked #65 in the list with 26 granted patents in 2023.

"In February 2024, the J U.S.-Egypt Science and Technology Joint Fund organized a study tour for eight Egyptian technology transfer professionals to the United States. They participated in AUTM's tech-transfer conference and interacted with American innovation practitioners. This activity is delivered in partnership with the AUTM and administered by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the U.S. and by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF) in Egypt through funding provided by the Government of the United States and Egypt."

Boston Scientific Corporation received FDA approval for the Farapulse™ Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) System, a simple, cost-effective alternative to the standard-of-care thermal ablation treatment. University of Iowa startup Farapulse, Inc. (originally Iowa Approach), developed the technology before medical device corporation Boston Scientific acquired the company in June 2021. Farapulse was founded by Dr. Steven Mickelsen in the Carver College of Medicine.
